In the first part of the Giro d'Italia, Katusha have rallied around Joaquim Rodriguez but as the GC leader is now out of the race, the Russian team has changed its tactics. From now on, it will be all about winning a stage and the team think that they have a number of good candidates to do so.
Today’s 7th stage (211 km from Frosinone to Foligno) brought the last chance for the sprinters before two mountain stages of the Giro d’Italia’s first week.
After almost 30 km from the start 5 riders went in the breakaway of the day. They stayed in front until the final 3 km of the race, when the peloton caught them. The massive sprint was concluded with a close victory of Nacer Bouhanni from FDJ.fr as the stage winner ahead of Giacomo Nizzolo from Trek Factory Racing. The daily podium was completed by Luka Mezgec from Giant-Shimano.
Team director José Azevedo explains the stage:
“After yesterday’s brutal stage, we immediately set up our mind and found a new direction for our tactics. Now, our main goal is to win at least a stage. In the beginning of today’s stage our riders already tried to go in the breakaway. There were a lot of attacks, with our riders, at the beginning of the stage, but finally, the right group of five got away after 28 km of racing.”
Tomorrow will be held the first real mountain stage – 179 km from Foligno to Montecopiolo with three climbs, including the final climb of 1st category.
