An expected mass sprint decided the winner of the 183,5 km stage 1 of the Eneco Tour. Elia Viviani (Team Sky) came through a frantic sprint to win the stage and pull on the first leader’s jersey of the race. Danny van Poppel (Trek Factory Racing) and Jean-Pierre Drucker (BMC) finished second and third respectively. Team Katusha's Viacheslav Kuznetsov and Rudi Selig finished 15th and 16th, respectively.
"Kuznetsov was involved in a crash earlier in the stage. Fortunately there were no major injuries for him and Aleksandr Porsev with Gatis Smukulis were able to bring him back to the peloton. This real sprint stage was not really a stage for us, but believe me, we have big ambitions for this Eneco Tour," said Team Director Torsten Schmidt.
The stage from Bolsward to Bolsward, in the north of the Netherlands, saw a six-rider breakaway being caught at 16 km from the finish. Tomorrow's flat stage brings the riders over 180 km from Breda to Breda (the Netherlands).
