Wilco Kelderman has created a surprise at the Dutch time trial championships. The LottoNL-Jumbo rider won gold in the time trial. Big favorite Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin) was a disappointing fourth.
In the 54.8km race against the clock, Kelderman (1:02:31) beat teammates Rick Flens (42 seconds) and Jos van Emden (44 seconds. Dumoulin was 49 seconds behind in fourth
Dumoulin was third at the World Championships time trial and winner of both time trials in the Tour of Switzerland but in Emmen it was soon clear that a victory was impossible
At the second time check at the halfway point where Van Emden was fastest, he was only sixth. He lost another 30 seconds to Kelderman before he got to the third intermediate check and so it was clear that was no title defence for the Giant-Alpecin rider.
Time triallists Stef Clement, Lieuwe Westra, Lars Boom, Niki Terpstra and Sebastian Langeveld all skipped the race which was temporarily stopped because Remco Grasman (Roompot) fell off the start ramp. The rider, last year's champion among the elite without contract, was transported to the hospital by ambulance.
