In this year's Giro d'Italia, Wilco Kelderman got his first chance to lead a team in a grand tour and the Dutchman travelled to Italy with the goal of a top 10 finish. Having ended the race in 7th overall, he is very pleased with the outcome of a race that has proved his future potential.
Wilco Kelderman concluded the 97th edition of the Giro d’Italia seventh overall today. Luka Mezgec (Giant-Shimano) won the flat final stage into Trieste, which saw no changes in the overall for the Belkin Pro Cycling TEAM.
“I’m very happy with this seventh place. I would have signed up for this beforehand,” the 23-year-old said. “I haven’t been able to enjoy it yet, but I think that’s going to happen now. It’s been a great Giro. I will not forget the eighth stage anytime soon. That was the first difficult ride of the race, and I finished third. Also, the Stelvio stage will stay with me for a long time, as well.”
Kelderman praised his teammates. He wouldn’t have made it as far as he did without them.
“The team has been fantastic in these past three weeks. Everyone was riding at or above their best levels. I could always rely on my men. Also, the atmosphere was great. It’s really important to have a good team around you.”
“Frans Maassen and I are very satisfied,” said Sports Director Jan Boven. “The men did very well. They knew exactly what to do. I’m really proud.
“Wilco proved that he can maintain a high level for three weeks. The mountain stages were all highlights, one by one. Wilco was able to get in the mix in every ride. Unfortunately, due to weather conditions, we didn’t get what we deserved in the team time trial in Belfast.”
In Kelderman’s wake, another young Belkin Pro Cycling TEAM rider impressed. Marc Goos, 23, was able to assist his leader over the high mountain passes deep into the last week. He finished eighth in the best young rider ranking. Kelderman placed fourth.
“I’m very happy,” said Goos. “This was my first grand tour, and despite a not entirely flawless preparation, it went very well. During our altitude training in Tenerife, I got sick. This Giro has been a journey of exploration for me. I didn’t really know what to expect, but I certainly did not expect it to go so well. I would like to have more of this in the future.”
