Wilco Kelderman of Belkin Pro Cycling Team nearly pulled off a stage win today in the Tour of Denmark stage three. However, he lost to Matti Breschel (Saxo Bank) and placed third in Vejle.
"It was hot and hard out there today. On the first city lap, Matti attacked and I went with him. We worked well together but then on the last climb I played my card, trying to drop him. Matti stayed on my wheel, though," Kelderman said.
Belkin rallied its team and took control after about 140 kilometres in the 200 kilometres stage from Sønderborg. Kelderman joined an attacking group of seven with Breschel and Lars Bak (Lotto-Belisol).
"It was a hot day, Saxo bank controlled it and then we took over," said Sports Director Michiel Elijzen. "Wilco got in the move, but so did Matti Breschel, who was just too strong."
'It's not over'
Kelderman sits well in the overall classification and leads the young riders' ranking, a good sign for tomorrow and winning the race on Sunday.
Elijzen added, "It's not over, we have the time trial tomorrow and we have big hopes for Wilco."
"I'm looking forward to win the GC," Kelderman explained. "I'm up there now and normally I go well in the time trial. I've got a chance to win but I have to keep an eye on Lars Bak who's up in the GC and strong."
Tomorrow the riders face a split day, a road stage in the morning and a 12.1-kilometre time trial in the afternoon. The race finishes on Sunday in Frederiksberg.
