Wilco Kelderman has continued his progress in his second professional season and now wants to see how far he can get in a grand tour. The young Dutchman hopes to ride the Giro with a GC focus in 2014.
Wilco Kelderman has long been hailed as the next big Dutch stage race rider and he has done a lot to justify that prediction in his second year as a professional. Now he wants to see how far he can get in a three-week race.
Already in his first season with Rabobank, he showed his potential when he finished in the top 10 in both the Tour of California and Criterium du Dauphiné but this year he has upped his level even further. Back in January, he was 6th in the Tour Down Under - won by teammate Tom-Jelte Slagter and he was 5th in the Tour de Romandie.
He got his first taste of grand tour racing in the Giro where he supported Robert Gesink while also finishing 17th overall and got his first stage race victory in the Tour of Denmark in August. A few weeks later he was 7th in the Eneco Tour.
Having had the chance to ride the Giro this year, he now wants to go back to Italy to target the GC. He hopes to be selected as Belkin captain for next year's edition of the Italian grand tour.
"I want to see how far I can get in the GC in Italy before trying the Tour," Kelderman tells De Telegraaf. "Therefore I would like to ride the Giro again."
Gesink didn't have much success this year as he was forced to abandon the race due to illness and may go back to previous habit of targeting the Tour. However, the team also has Bauke Mollema, Laurens Ten Dam and Steven Kruijswijk in its ranks and so there is plenty of stage race potential on the Dutch team.
Kelderman is currently riding the Tour of Beijing where he is 19th overall.
