Peter Kennaugh may have missed out on selection for the Team Sky Tour de France roster but the Brit is definitely in great condition at the moment. Two weeks after winning the British road race championships, he has secured himself the overall victory in the Tour of Austria after having led the race from start to finish.

Peter Kennaugh sealed the 2014 Tour of Austria title after finishing safely in the bunch as the sprinters had their day in Vienna.

Despite the rain the Manxman was never troubled on the eighth and final stage and cruised home in the front group as Marco Haller (Katusha) sprinted to victory on the finishing circuit around the Austrian capital.

Kennaugh wrapped up the overall victory and point jersey after an imperious display which saw him win the opening stage and lead the race from start to finish.

The rain started to fall as the peloton negotiated their way around the finishing circuit and it was Haller who judged the tricky conditions the best as he sprinted to the win ahead of Jacopo Guarnieri (Astana) and Raymond Kreder (Garmin-Sharp).

The win marked Kennaugh's fifth victory of the year and the second pro stage race GC of his career.

“I’m really happy to be able to finish off the race and take the win," he told TeamSky.com

“Heading into this year I really wanted to win a pro bike race as I was going into my fifth year as a pro without a victory. It was really good to do that at Coppi Bartali and then the nationals. I think I got a bit more confidence from those results and I had some good form after the Tour de Suisse. It was just nice to use it here and I’m happy I could finish it off.

“On the first day I wasn’t thinking much about the GC. I felt good and went for the stage and it’s gone from there really.

“The team have been really good. It was nice to see everyone get stronger each day. We had a few teething problems early on but on each stage it’s got better and better. We’ve finished the race and gelled really well. It’s been good to be a part of.”

Sports Director Dan Frost was another happy man and talked us through some tricky conditions in the finale.

"With two laps to go it stared pouring down," he explained. "The commissaires decided they would take the time on the penultimate lap. Our guys were at the front and safe. There was a crash on the last corner but luckily we didn't have anyone in that as it would have been a shame.

"We expected Pete would keep the yellow jersey but you never know when conditions are like that. The race is not over until the finish. Pete was happy and the whole team are really pleased. It's been a great team performance this week. Now we can look forward and be ready for the upcoming races with good morale."
