After two seasons with lots of hardships, it is uncertain what Fredrik Kessiakoff will be doing in 2015. Will he sign a contract with a team or will the career be over? "It's a hard market and I have to decide what I want," he tells Eurosport.se.
After his excellent 2012 season, 34-year-old Fredrik Kessiakoff has had two fruitless seasons. This year he had an early crash in Strade Bianche and got some deep wounds which hampered him for a long time. The team sent him to race after race but he was always far off the pace. He got a virus infection that he discovered in the summer.
When things changed and he was again fresh, it was too late to reacg peak form for the Vuelta and then there were not many races left in the season.
Neither himself nor Astana wanted to extend the contract which expires at the end of the year. At the same time, the rider market is very hard at the moment. Kessiakoff still hasn't found another team but he doesn't seem to be too depressed.
"I definitely don't sit at home, thinking about the future or feel bad and frustrated. This uncertainty that I have right now - I think it is pretty great," he tells Eurosport.se.
"I don't sit at hom and feel depressed. Without a team I don't know what I am going to do next year. I enjoy it. It feels great. I try to seize the day, I enjoy my off-season, spend time at home in Sweden and goes to see family and friends and that feels pretty great. Sooner or later I will found our what I am going to do next year. Then I will know what path I am going to follow but at the moment I haven't found a solution so I can't stick out a new path which feels pretty nice."
When he finally felt fresh this summer, he again started to enjoy his racing and the desire to continue returned. He has an agent, Giuseppe Acquadro, who is looking for a team.
"My agent has contacted a few teams but I can't say more than that. For me, it is also important that the team is at a certain level. Otherwise, I have no interest."
He has also considered what to do if he doesn't continue as a professional bike rider.
"That's what I am considering. So I cannot say more than that because I want to wait and see. First I need to decide whether to continue. It has to be at a level that is motivating. I don't want to be riding at a level which makes me think "Ah, this isn't fun" in January. Secondly, I want a team where I know that I will get some support, which has certain ressources and which does some races that I find motivating. Then I walso need to be convinced that this is really what I want and that I can reach the level that I want and which is the reason that I am riding. I need to weigh all those things up against each other."
