One week after winning the time trial at the European Games, Vasil Kiryienka (Sky) confirmed his status as one of the best time triallists in the world by winning his first Belarusian TT title since 2006. The multiple grand tour stage winner was 2.03 faster than Branislau Samoilau (CCC) while Andrei Krasilnikau (Minsk) was 2.40 behind in third.
During the last few seasons, Kiryienka has gradually developed into one of the best time triallists, winning the long time trial in this year's Giro and finishing in the top 4 in the three latest TT Worlds. However, he has mostly skipped his national championships after he won the title in 2002, 2005 and 2006.
Set to miss the Tour de France this year and having just been in Baku for the European Games, Kiryienka decided to return to his home country for a rare appearance and he was always the big favourite. He covered the 36.3km course in Mozyr in 41.46 to crush the opposition and dethroning his teammate Kanstantsin Siutsou who was absent.
The road race championships takes place on Sunday.
