After two months of absence, Marcel Kittel (GER) will make his racing comeback at the Tour de Yorkshire (UK). Leaving behind a challenging time with the recovery of a virus, the German enjoys his time with the team and looks forward to race in the region where he keeps good memories.
“I was not aware what a special place this is for me. I arrived in York and saw the racing track and suddenly all the memories of last year came back to me. I am really happy to be here and having Yorkshire close to my heart.
“I didn’t need much conviction to come to Yorkshire. For me it is a great race, especially now in my difficult situation. The three days of good and hard racing is what I need and I am really looking forward to race again.
“For me everything went far from smooth. After Australia I became sick and I thought it was a cold. Afterwards it turned out to be a virus, which we found out after Qatar. It took the physicians and me a long time to figure that out and to exclude any health risk through many examinations.
“I started training four weeks ago. Since then it is not really going super good, as I got sick again two weeks ago, it has been an unlucky period for me so far.
“For now I am happy to be healthy and back on the bike again, I enjoy the time with my teammates here. The season is underway for a while and being out of competition was a challenging time for me
“I have to be realistic, I have been off the bike for a pretty long time so I will see how it goes day by day and won’t do promises on performances.
“Important now is to find my way back into racing. My condition is not perfect since I only had a couple of days of good training, but at least we can make a start. I do not focus on specific goals for now, getting back has the highest priority and then we will see.”
