Ramon Sinkeldam sprinted to a 4th at stage 2 of World Ports Classic after a finale that was ruined by a big crash that took place in the bunch. The World Ports Classic has come to an end with the finish of the second stage of 164km that took the riders from Antwerp to Rotterdam.
In beautiful weather conditions, 6 riders made the early escape to spend their day in the front. The sprinters teams controlled the pace and closed the gap with 4.5km to go, as a bunch sprint was prepared.
With 4km to the line, a huge crash happened in the front of the bunch that took out Marcel Kittel. Fortunately, he was unharmed. 15 riders including Sinkeldam could go through to go for victory. In the sprint, Kris Boeckmans (Lotto – Soudal) took the victory as Sinkeldam sprinted to a 4th place. Boekmans also won the overall in World Ports Classic.
“It was a calm and controlled stage with a hectic and difficult finale because of its many turns and roundabouts. A bunch sprint was prepared but a big crash ruined our plans. Five of our guys were held up, including Marcel, who crashed, fortunately without harm. Only Ramon could go through and sprinted to a 4th“, explained coach Rudi Kemna.
