In the first week of the Tour de France, Leopold König has already lost quite a bit of time to his rivals and today his bad luck continued when he hit the deck in stage 6. Luckily, he escaped the incident without any injuries and managed to survive the fast pace in the crosswinds to avoid any further time loss.
The sixth stage of the Tour de France took the riders in a southeasterly direction from the north of France. The flat, 194-kilometer stage from Arras to Reims once again was a race well-suited for sprinters, just like yesterday's dramatic stage. André Greipel (Lotto-Belisol) managed to claim the win of the day with ease. He relegated Alexander Kristoff (Katusha) and Samuel Dumoulin (AG2R) into second and third place, respectively. Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) continues to wear the yellow jersey. Tiago Machado and Leo König crossed the finish line with the lead group, and they are now in 24th and 31st place, respectively, in the general classification.
“Actually, it was our plan today to be a part of the group because a tailwind was forecast for most of the race, which meant there was a chance that the group would make it through. It was a bit of a pity that we weren't able to implement that plan. Then the guys supported Leo and Tiago very well during the stage. That even paid off when Leo suffered a fall. All of them were there right away to help him. During the final part of the race, we rode very cautiously and were able to be out in front during the crosswind. And so we didn’t lose any time. Even after yesterday’s difficult stage, today was not exactly a day to recover. Nevertheless, we didn't have to spend too much energy,” said Enrico Poitschke, Team NetApp – Endura's sport director, at the finish in Reims.
