Jure Kocjan is enjoying the most beautiful moments of his sporting life as he currently wears the Tour of Utah leader's jersey. With a summit finish in today's stage 4, however, the Slovenian is expected to relinquish the lead and he admits that it will be a tough ask to mix it up with the climbers in what could be the hardest stage of the race.
Overall race leader Jure Kocjan (Slovenia) of Team Smartstop retained his leader’s jersey by finishing sixth on yesterday’s 118.3-mile stage. Kocjan continues to hold a two-second lead over BMC Racing Team’s Michael Schär (Switzerland) and an eight-second margin over Serghei Tvetcov (Romania) of Jelly Belly presented by Maxxis.
“The guys were awesome today. They led on the front of the peloton from the start (in Lehi) and they worked hard. The crosswinds made the stage much more difficult than it looked at first, so we just stayed at the front. I just stayed all the time at the front of the peloton and just controlled the pace,” Kocjan said at the post-race press conference at Miller Motorsports Park.
Stage 4 is poised to deliver the first big shakeup in the General Classification with the mountaintop finish at Powder Mountain. "Tomorrow's stage for sure is very difficult. The pure climbers will probably show their legs. We'll see. They said the yellow jersey takes off 10 pounds," Kocjan said with a laugh, "so we'll see how it goes on the climb."
