Netapp-Endura’s Leopold Konig will decide his future next week, with three WorldTour teams offering him a contract as well as his current Netapp team offering a renewal.
Konig was tenth and won a stage in the 2013 Vuelta a Espana and backed up this showing with s very impressive seventh overall in last month’s Tour de France. He told Cyclingnews at the end of the Tour that he would listen to all offers he received.
His manager, MTN-Qhubeka’s interim manager Brian Smith, thinks the Czech star will probably be on a WorldTour team next year. Smith would not say who was interested in Konig but did say that he had another WorldTour team chasing him but they opted to pursue another rider instead.
“He has plenty of options at the moment, and we’re just waiting for the right team to come along because it’s important that a rider like that gets the best team. The negotiations are underway,” Smith told Cyclingnews.
“Leo needs to experience being at one of the top teams in the world. That’s why I think he gets the right opportunity. He’s got three offers from WorldTour teams at the moment. Netapp want to keep him but I think it’s important that he rides at WorldTour so he gets the best of everything.”
