The Court of Arbitration for Sport has announced that Roman Kreuziger’s appeal hearing will take place on June 10. The Czech rider was cleared of a Biological Passport violation in September after a 15-month case, but the UCI made an appeal to CAS.
The verdict from the hearing is likely to come just before the Tour de France, meaning Kreuziger could ride the Giro d’Italia to support Alberto Contador in his quest for victory. At once point, Kreuzger was banned from racing by the UCI in relation to the values in his passport in relation to the 2011 and 2012 Giros, which he rode with Astana.
He has always maintained his innocence, with his explanation for his unusual blood values centred around a claim that he used the substitute hormone L-Thyroxine as treatment for an under-active thyroid. L-Thyroxine is not on the WADA banned list and does not require a therapeutic use exemption.
This isn’t the first time the UCI have gone through CAS for a biological passport appeal. In 2011 CAS heard the case of Franco Pellizotti with the Italian rider eventually handed a two-year ban. The UCI has never lost an appeal to CAS concerning the Biological Passport.
