Czech rider Roman Kreuziger has called a halt to his 2013 season and will thus forego the world championships road race in Italy on Sunday. The Saxo-Tinkoff rider said he doesn’t feel sufficiently fit for the 272 kilometre long race and announced that he will not take part in any more races this season.

“I was training in Italy last week but the training brought no improvement to my form. It’s no use just to ride this race if I can’t produce a good result,” Kreuziger said according to Tuttobiciweb.it

Roman Kreuziger has enjoyed a successful inaugural season with Saxo-Tinkoff, winning Amstel Gold Race in April and finishing fifth overall in the Tour de France in July. Furthermore, he also claimed third at the Tour de Suisse overall and the Clasica San Sebastian.

Last month Kreuziger took to the starting line in the Vuelta a España, yet he predictably abandonded on stage 14 in order to prepare for the Worlds.

“I kept training in Italy but my condition wasn’t what I wanted it to be. I worked a lot but I’m not in form, so it’s better to pull out. I spoke about it with [Saxo-Tinkoff manager] Bjarne Riis. He said I should stop if I didn’t feel up to it, so my season ends here,” Kreuziger added.

Martin Hunal of Sparta Prague replaces Kreuziger in the Czech line-up for the road race on Sunday. The team also consists of Omega Pharma–Quick Step’s Zdenek Stybar and Frantisek Rabon, Leopold König and Jan Barta of Net-App Endura, BMC stagiaire Jakub Novak, and Stanislav Kozubek of Bauknecht.
