Although his Saxo-Tinkoff team is yet to publicly announce its squad for the last grand tour of the season, the Vuelta a España, Roman Kreuziger has confirmed that he will ride the Vuelta.
At the same time Kreuziger insisted that he would treat the Vuelta as a warm-up race and would instead focus on building up to the world championships in Florence in September.
“I’m not entering the Vuelta as leader of the team, that would be too much for me this season,” Kreuziger told Biciciclismo.com. “I only want to prepare the world championships, where I would like to do well, as the route is very hard. The leaders for the Vuelta will have to be Majka, Roche and maybe Chris Anker Sørensen. I’ll limit myself to trying to win a stage.”
Starting Monday, Kreuziger commences his Vuelta preparation with a ten-day training camp in the Italian town of Livigno a number of the Saxo-Tinkoff squad currently racing at the Tour of Poland. The Vuelta kicks off in Galicia on August 24.
For Kreuziger the participation in this year’s Vuelta means a return to the Spanish grand tour after three years’ absence. In 2010 Kreuziger played an essential role in helping Liquigas teammate Vincenzo Nibali to overall victory.
