After performing way below expectations at the recent Criterium du Dauphiné, Michal Kwiatkowski will undergo medical tests to make sure that he hasn't picked up any kind of illness in the build-up for the Tour de France. Team manager Patrick Lefevere is confident that nothing is wrong with his Polish star.

With podium places in two out of three Ardennes classics, victories in Strade Bianche and the Volta ao Algarve and a runner-up spot in the Vuelta al Pais Vasco, Michal Kwiatkowski has been one of the most successful riders in the early part of the season. After a short break from competition, he is set to make his return to the Tour de France in a quest to improve on last year's 11th place and possibly win the white jersey.

After a long break, Kwiatkowski returned to competition in last week's Criterium du Dauphiné but things certainly didn't go to plan for the strong Pole. In the mountains, he was far off the pace and he left the race ahead of the mountainous final weekend.

Yesterday he was included in the Omega Pharma-Quick Step long list for the Tour de France but his poor performance has raised some concern. He will now undergo tests to make sure that nothing is wrong.

“We are not too worried for the time being, but we want to rule out that he has a virus,” team manager Patrick Lefevere told Sporza. “We just want to make sure that there is nothing lurking in his blood before we travel to Leeds for the Tour start.

“There is little to worry about. He’s just a little bit over-tired after a very busy spring. After altitude training, it is hard to find rhythm again.”
