The fighting spirit of Team LAMPRE-MERIDA was alive until 7km from the end of the last stage of the Tour de France, due to Nelson Oliveira who attacked with Valbilsen and Perichon on the Champs Elysées circuit.
The trio resisted with 30″ of advantage but the chase was completed with 7 km to go. The traditional bunch sprint was won by Greipel, Davide Cimolai was 19th after having approached the sprint in a good position.
"It was very hard today, but I was also unlucky," Cimolai told Rai. "I have been ill for the last two days and I have made a huge effort to get through together with my teammates. In the last kilometer I missed the legs but it is normal considering the effort I have made before. It is too bad, I wanted to do well in the final stage."
Plaza is the best LAMPRE-MERIDA rider in the overall classification: he’s 30th, at 1h38’22”.
The Spanish rider gave the blue-fuchsia-green colors the joy of a success in the Grand Boucle five years after Petacchi last took a stage win for the team. In addition to this stage victory, LAMPRE-MERIDA obtained four places in the top ten thanks to Cimolai, the 8th place in the team time trial in Plumelec and the 10th position of Plaza in Alpe d’Huez, in addition to the attacks by Valls, Durasek and Serpa.
