Lampre-Merida rode the Clasica San Sebastian as an outsider to the victory due to the strong peloton of the race. But the team showed a strong team performance as one of the leading teams. The best rider from the Italian team was Jose Serpa, who finished 13th.

Besides from Serpa’s performance, Durasek finished 19th and the Portuguese Champion Nelson Oliveira finished 30th.  Also the team saw Cimolai in the first breakaway of the day which was railed in after only 20 kilometres.

The course, despite it was changed comparing to the past, was still interesting and even more demanding. This year the riders covered the climb of Iturburu, the double passages on Jaizkibel and Arkale and the crucial climb of Igueldo with only 7 km to the arrival.

The peloton reached the final climb and it was there Valverde made his winning attack that allowed him to reach the arrival, chased by a group of 6 riders and a second chasing group of 13 cyclists in which Serpa and Durasek were. Their gap to Valverde was 43 seconds.

"The team performance was good, we were focused in every moment of the race and all the riders demonstrated their form. We deserved the first place in the team’s classification,” DS Matxin pointed out. “Anyway, our performances were not enough to be able to fight for the victory or to be in the top 10.”

“I appreciated the fight by Cimolai to attack in the early part of the race, later Polanc and Oliveira demonstrated that their condition is good. Favilli and Pozzato's performances were also quite interesting,” he said.

“In the final kilometers, there were few riders pedaling in competitive way: it's important for us that Serpa and Durasek were among them".
