The arrival of Mikel Landa at Team Sky throws a spanner in the works for Wout Poels. The Dutchman hoped to do the Giro d'Italia which starts in the Dutch city of Apeldoorn as team leader but with his new Spanish teammate, the Limburger tells L1 that his chances are much smaller.
"I will probably not do the Giro this year," admits Poels. "Last year Landa was third in the Giro. I expect that he's going to be the captain. Of course I would have been happy to have gone for my own chances but if that's not going to be so, you must move on."
Instead, he turns his focus to July when Chris Froome will defend his title at the Tour de France. This season Poels was an important part of the Brit's second Tour win. "It will probably again be the Tour in the service of Chris, and that's nice," says the climber from Venray.
After the Tour de France, Poels would like to be part of the Orange team for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The Dutch team can send four riders to the climbing course with start and finish near the Copacabana.
