"Geraint did a really good job to miss the crash there at the finish. With the crash happening inside three kilometres to go he gets the same time as everyone else."

Geraint Thomas retained fourth place overall despite being held up behind a crash in the final metres of stage four at the Tour de Suisse.

The Welshman had to swerve to avoid a falling Movistar rider as a select group wound up for the sprint in Schwarzenbach, and despite crossing the line 18 seconds back on the day's winner, the Team Sky rider was awarded the same time as the lead group. He now sits nine seconds back on the race lead.

Sergio Henao enlivened the finale with a late attack as the road ramped upwards. The Colombian was able to create a small gap and combined with Jan Bakelants (Ag2r-La Mondiale) and Marco Marcato (Wanty Groupe Goubert) before the trio were caught with 2.2km to go.

A fierce pace from Orica-GreenEdge saw the day's break caught with 50km left to race and it was Michael Matthews who stepped up to take the victory. The Australian came off the wheel of Peter Sagan (Tinkoff-Saxo) to win the stage, with Greg van Avermaet (BMC Racing) rounding out the podium in third.

Henao crossed the line 16th in the same group, moving up to 19th overall, 1:23 back on leader Tom Dumoulin (Giant-Alpecin).

The Dutchman narrowly held on to the lead by less than a second, largely due to winning a late intermediate sprint on the tricky finishing circuit. Thomas crossed the line third in the same contest to secure himself a single second.

"Geraint did a really good job to miss the crash there at the finish," confirmed Sports Director Gabriel Rasch. "With the crash happening inside three kilometres to go he gets the same time as everyone else.

"Sergio had a dig on the climb towards the end. We said that if he felt like he had the legs and saw an opportunity he could give it a try.

"He didn't expend too much energy and obviously tomorrow is the really big day on GC. It's going to be a difficult one. It's a really, really hard climb and a very long stage. Hopefully G has the legs tomorrow and the guys can back him up as much as possible."
