Shane Archbold sprinted to third place at the 69th edition of the French classic Grand Prix d'Isbergues. After 204 kilometers he was only beaten by the French sprinter Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) and Michael Kolar from Team Tinkoff-Saxo.
After a second place at the Clasica Corsica and a third place at the Three Days of De Panne in the first half of the season, it is already the third sprint podium of the season for the 26-year-old New Zealander of Bora-Argon 18. Today's race was dominated by a small breakaway group, but it was controlled by the sprinters' teams in the field and caught in time before the final.
Bora-Argon 18 Sport Director Andre Schulze after the race:
"Our goal was a podium and accordingly we are satisfied with the race result. Since we started with only six riders, we initially saved our energy. We wanted to fully concentrate on the bunch sprint and to show ourselves not before the last 30 kilometers. The guys should always ride in the front third on the narrow finish laps, thus keeping Shane in a good position. This worked very well and the whole team has done a great job. In the finale, Michael Schwarzmann was assigned as the lead-out for Shane and he placed him just perfectly. He delivered Shane right on the rear of Cofidis on the last kilometer, so that Shane had the perfect launch for his sprint."
