Belgian Tom Boonen, who won the world road race in 2005, was confident to try to win his second world title. But Peter Sagan showed he was the stronger last Sunday at the World. Etixx-Quick Step general manager Patrick Lefevere says that his rider is disappointed even if he has come in third the road race.
"This was his last World Championships, his last chance. He put everything into this race, had really counted on it. And then it didn’t happen," Lefevere explained according to nieuwsblad.be. "In thirteen, fourteen years, I’ve never seen Tom so disappointed."
"Tom was also a bit early in second position. But given the circumstances, it was very difficult to make more out it." He added that Slovakian Peter Sagan is "the best rider in the world".
