Volta a Catalunya, stage 3: Vidreres to Vallter 2000, 180.1 km
After two days for the sprinters, the GC will start to take shape today with the first of two crucial days in the mountains. From the city of Vidreres near the coast, the race travels in-land to approach the mighty Pyrenees and the first mountaintop finish of the race. After an easy start, the riders hit the Saint Hilari climb (1st category, 10 km, 4,5%) which will make sure to tire the legs before the final showdown. That final battle will start with another 1st category climb, Alto de Collabos (4,5 km, 9%) whose summit will be crested with 34 km to go, and after a very short descent, the road rises all the way to the finish with the final HC climb officially starting with 12 km remaining. At an average gradient of 7,8%, it is a tough affair, and riders will have to save some strength for the final steep 500m, 11% stretch. With Wiggins' surprise attack in stage 1, a number of GC contenders are already distanced and will need to use every opportunity to gain back time. The battle is certainly going to be fierce!
