Tinkoff-Saxo missed out on the front action of Giro di Lombardia, as team captain Rafal Majka was not with good sensations during the 245km race. After Thursday’s 2nd place in Milano-Torino, Majka had to let go of the front group on Muro di Sormano, while the season’s final monument was claimed by Vincenzo Nibali.
After Sunday’s extended action on the 245km parcours from Bergamo to Como, Tinkoff-Saxo sports director Bruno Cenghialta comments:
“It was not a good day for us today. The team backed Rafal Majka and worked together really well. But after the Madonna del Ghisallo and on the steep Muro di Sormano, Rafal was dropped. It was obvious that he didn’t have a good day and that can happen at this time of the season. He has had a very long season and he has tried to carry on his shape from the Vuelta. It’s difficult to do so, Thursday he was 2nd and today he didn’t have it. That’s cycling but Rafal can look back on a very good second part of the season”, comments Bruno Cenghialta.
Giro di Lombardia set out from Bergamo and challenged a field of multiple favorites with 245 highly undulating kilometers and several prominent steep sections. Ultimately, Vincenzo Nibali took a solo win with Rafal Majka finishing 69th after he had eased up as he became distanced from the front of the race following the Muro di Sormano.
“Rafal lost a bit of ground on the Muro di Sormano and ended up in a chasing group that lost time to the front group. In the end, it was unrealistic to close the gap. Now, we got a group of riders traveling to Abu Dhabi to take part in the Abu Dhabi Tour. Peter Sagan will be there as the new World Champion – we’re excited about it and ready to give it a final push before the season is concluded”, finishes Bruno Cenghialta.
