According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Marco Marcato has agreed terms with the Cannondale team and will soon sign a contract to join the squad for next season. If the rumours are confirmed, the Paris-Tours winner is the most recent Vacansoleil rider to find a new team.
The disbandment of the Vacansoleil team has left several riders looking for new teams and now it seems that another one of the squad's best riders has found a home for next season. La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that reigning Paris-Tours champion Marco Marcato has agreed terms with the Cannondale team and will sign a contract to join the Italian team in the near future.
Marcato is known as a classics specialist who excels on shorter climbs and has a fast sprint. Following several places of honour in shorter stage races and a 2nd place in the 2011 Paris-Tours, he got his breakthrough when he won last year's edition of the French autumn classic. That victory was his third as a professional after his wins in the 2011 Tour de Vendee and a stage of the 2012 Etoile de Besseges.
His final season with the Vacansoleil squad has been more complicated and apart from a number of top 10 finishes in the Tour du Luxembourg, the Tour de Wallonie, GP Stad Zottegem and Druivenkoers-Overijse, he hasn't any major results so far. He will finish his time at Vacansoleil by defending his Paris-Tours title in a little less than two weeks.
If the signing is confirmed, Marcato will be a welcome addition for Peter Sagan who has often found himself isolated at the end of the classics. Marcato will be an important wingman who will significantly enhance Sagan's winner chances in the future.
