For only the third time this season, Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) was defeated in a time trial when he was beaten into 2nd by Fabian Cancellara (Radioshack) in the Vuelta a Espana today. However, the world champion was satisfied with his ride and acknowledges that he lost to an outstanding athlete.
Tony Martin was the big favourite to win today's time trial in the Vuelta a Espana, having won most of his races against the clock this season. However, he faced a rare defeat, being knocked into 2nd by arch rival Fabian Cancellara who crushed the opposition on the hilly course in Tarazona.
It's the first time since the 2010 world championships that Cancellara has beaten an injury-free Martin who has taken over the crown as the world's leading time triallist. Martin is currently preparing himself for his title defence and today's stage was an important test.
Despite the defeat, Martin was happy with his ride and is content that he is getting into his best form for his big target.
"I'm happy with my race," Martin said. "I had to face lot of headwind but I maintained always a good speed. Even on the climb I did well. I think I had one of the best times at the top of it. Cancellara was really outstanding, congratulations to him. Concerning me, I think I did a good race. My condition is good and today it was another important step on the road to the worlds."
Compared to today's race, the worlds course is much flatter and should suit Martin better. Cancellara has set his sights on the roads race and has lost plenty of weight which favoured him on today's climb.
Reportedly, Cancellara is undecided about his participation in the time trial but today's performance may convince him to give a 5th worlds title a shot. Hence, today's defeat may have not been without cost for Martin as he may now face an extra rival at his title defence.
