According to Irish website Stickybottle.com, Dan Martin has undergone successful surgery on the broken collarbone – an injury he suffered in a consequence of a dramatic Garmin-Sharp’s crash during the Giro d’Italia opening team time trial on Friday. American team’s spokesperson also confirmed that Irishman’s schedule for the rest of the 2014 season is yet to be determined and so cut recent discussion over his appearance at the Tour de France in seven weeks.
"There have been no decisions on his schedule at all. The top priority is his recovery," team spokesperson Marya Pongrace told Cyclingnews.
Even though Martin was hitting the tarmac rather frequently within last several months, most recently while fighting for the victory in the Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Pongrace pointed out that the 27-year old Irishman suffered a collarbone fracture for the first time and thus the team is focused on his recovery without making any early predictions about his return to competition.
"This is his first broken bone and his first surgery and he (and we) needs to take it day by and focus solely on his recovery. Absolutely no decisions about race schedule have been made."
Friday’s incident left Garmin-Sharp two man down in the Italian grand tour, with their sole captain, Ryder Hesjedal, sitting 3:26 behind maglia rosa Michael Matthews (Orica-GreenEDGE).
