After three seasons at Orica GreenEDGE Cycling Team, Matthew Harley Goss will join the African team MTN Qhubeka. He will have the role of sprinter and thinks that this formation can actually help him to win more. He will share this role with others sprinters: Theo Bos, Tyler Farrar, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Gerald Ciolek and Reinardt Janse van Rensburg.
"Being in that shared role is a good environment in the races, because if someone isn't having a good day then you have someone else who can finish it off. In 2010 and 2011 I wasn't the main sprinter there [at HTC-Colombia], I was probably third in line because I was racing with [Mark] Cavendish and [André] Greipel in the team. I took my opportunities when they arose and I managed to make the most of them", he told Cyclingnews.
He added: "It is a lot about having the respect for your teammates and being honest in yourself and how you're feeling. If we can all do that then we will all get opportunities and when you do get them then everyone is going to back you 100%. Everyone has got different stories but we've all got the same drive and motivation. We're all heading towards the same goals."
This year, his best performance was a second place at the 2nd stage of Paris-Nice and at the 1st stage of Herald Sun Tour. His last victory was a stage at Tirreno-Adriatico, in 2013.
"I have done the big sprints at the Tour and at the Giro and I've not always been the fastest guy. I'm first to admit that Theo is someone that I would be happy to help in the bunch sprints, I think he's got the speed to take it to the best guys," said Goss. "I'd like to focus on the slightly undulating, slightly longer races where I've had more success in the past. I'm going to take my opportunities in these races and try to win and get results, but also there is a chance to support a fantastic team."
