Michael Matthews says all the air has been cleared after the comments Matthews made post-Worlds when he said teammate and compatriot Simon Gerrans sprinted against him rather than helping him in the race. Matthews went on to take silver.
"I don't regret anything I said. I think I said what needed to be said, and we talked after the race and cleared it all up," said Matthews in an interview with Fairfax Media.
Robbie McEwen said there was a rift between the duo that would now affect their ability to work together in races for their team, Orica-GreenEDGE. Matthews denied the existence of this rift.
"With what Robbie said about a rift, I think it's all cleared now. Everyone's said what they've wanted to say… we're all professional bike riders, we're all there for a reason: we all want to win when there's an opportunity to win. I wasn't too happy about the comment because obviously we're both winners, me and Simon, so we both saw an opportunity to win the world championship, so we both wanted to go for it.”
"I don't think it's going to create any barrier between me and Gerrans. It's all sorted, we both respect each other as riders, so I think we just move on and hopefully achieve more goals."
Matthews was also unhappy on stage 12 of the Giro, where Gerrans was Orica’s man for the stage when Matthews felt it should have been himself the team supported. In the end, Gerrans crashed and couldn’t contest the final. Matthews devoid of support, finished 32nd, 29 seconds down on winner Philippe Gilbert on Monte Berico.
