Spanish sports director Joxean Fernández Matxin will be part of the Ettix-Quick Step staff next season. L'Equipe announces that the Spaniard will join the Belgian team after two years at Lampre-Merida.
The French sports daily claims that Joxean Fernandez Matxin will be responsible for the scouting of new talents.
With the new deal, Matxin is returning to his root because he debuted as sports director with Mapei-Quick Step in 2001 and in 2002 he was in charge of the group of talents that included riders like Fabian Cancellara, Filippo Pozzato, Allan Davis and Michael Rogers.
Matxin then joined Vini Caldirola and from 2004 he joined Mauro Gianetti to lead the Saunier Duval team. That team folded in 2011 after they had won the Vuelta a Espana with Juan Jose Cobo under the Geox name.
In 2013, he signed with Lampre-Merida but he was not part of Brent Copeland's and Giuseppe Saronni's plans for 2014. At 43 years of age, he is ready to take the next step in his career.
