It was a first Top-10 for Bardiani – CSF who had Enrico Battaglin in 8th at the end of stage 3 of the Giro d’Italia which finished in Sestri Levante after 136km.
The #Greenteam sent two riders, Edoardo Zardini and Luca Chirico, into the large 25-man breakaway who attacked after the start. Zardini was the first to cross the climb of Colle Caprile to win the first KOM sprint but he did’t repeat in the second and decisive one at Barbagelata (cat. 2), where he was dropped due to cramps, after a good work in front of Chirico
.
The peloton caught the last escapees with 5km to go and sprinted for the win Sestri Levante. The victory was taken by maglia rosa Michael Matthews (Orica – GreenEdge). Enrico Battaglin emerged from behind and achieved a good 8th place.
”Our first target was the blue jersey with Zardini. He took the points on the first climb but when he arrived at the bottom of the last and decisive, he suffered from cramps due to wrong hydration and he was dropped. Then Pirazzi attacked from the peloton and easily joined the breakaway but unfortunately he had a chain problem and was back in the peloton soon after. In the end, the positive thing came from Battaglin who sprinted to 8th. Now I await a confirmation from him in tomorrow's stage," manager Roberto Reverberi said.
”Today was a good chance for me but honestly I expected to do better. There was too much chaos in the last kilometre with GC contenders in the first positions. I lost the right position and I was only 8th. Tomorrow in La Spezia I want to improve. The route looks good for me."
