Tom Meeusen proved that he is still capable of winning the big races on the cyclo-cross calendar when his used great tactical skills and his aggressive riding style to win a very strange edition of the Azencross in Loenhout. The Belgian attacked halfway through the race and as no one reacted, he rode solo for the final part of the race.
"For a couple of weeks, I have felt that I am getting stronger," Meeusen told Het Nieuwsblad. "I was not good enough to win, but today that was the case. I'm glad I am back at my level.
"This is the cross that I always attended with my father as a little boy," added Meeusen. "If you can ride alone in the lead for four laps ahead and win here, it's very special. I am also glad that I can conclude 2015 with a victory. It was a very difficult year for me and this year it was not too good for me in the races so that gives this a double importance.
Before the race, some riders complained about the course: it was too fast, too technical and more for BMX riders. "Yes, the weather can change things a bit," said Meeusen. "Last year it was muddy here. This year it wasn't and then you also have those many obstacles. I'm a technical rider and have made the difference today with my technical skills and I chose the right time to go on the offensive. I did well on this course. Sometimes there are circuits with lots of stairs and there other riders have the advantage. I think that the average riders could jump all obstacles.
"I knew it would be hard for them to catch me when I had 15 seconds. In the technical sections, they would not make up time and in the long straights they would have to go faster."
Meeusen had to wait long for this important victory. "In the past few crosses, I sometimes had a turbulent ride. I continued to ride even though I knew that the others were better. But I think that's the only way to push your limits because the level is so close."
What can Meeusen do at the championships with his growing form? "I had hoped to be good at the end of December to go with more mental peace to the championships. I have had very few good performances, the pressure is still there. But it is good to start January with this victory in my pocket."
Until now, Meeusen has won two smaller races in Meulebeke and Ardooie. "This year I have not performed well enough to go to the championships with peace of mind. I'm just glad to get to this level again. In recent races, I was still always missing something but I have pushed my limits and now I reap the rewards. With a view to the Belgian and World Championships, this is a boost. Now there is quite a bit of pressure."
