The Giro del Trentino reached its conclusion today after the final stage saw the victory being decided by the breakaway. Paolo Tiralongo (Astana) was the rider coming out on top with David Arroyo (Caja Rural) in 2nd and Fabio Duarte (Colombia) in 3rd.
It was always thought that the break could survive on today’s final stage and so a number of teams tried to have representation in the early move. Initially 15 riders got away with Adrien Niyonshuti and Daniel Teklehaimanot representing Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung at the head of the race.
Cannondale-Garmin missed the break and so did all they could to try and get a rider across to the move. Eventually they had a rider jump across to the break but he was followed by Diego Rosa (Astana) and with the Italian only 2'00" down on GC, Team Sky were having none of that and brought the race back together.
With 80km to go, a new break of 7 riders formed and with none a threat on GC, they were allowed to ride away and decide the stage among themselves. Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung looked to keep Louis Meintjes out of harm’s way, and would go on to successfully defending the young South African's lead in the white jersey competition and 8th position overall. Richie Porte (Team Sky) would win the race overall.
"I am really happy to have won the white jersey once again. I want to thank my team who were just so amazing once again today. My legs were feeling really good during today's stage and I just hope that they can feel the same on Sunday for Liege-Bastogne-Liege," Meintjes said.
"The last stage of Giro del Trentino has been one of those fast crazy days when the race goes from the start to the final at full speed with continual action," sports director Alex Sans Vega said. "In the beginning Adrien and Daniel made it into a group of 15 riders but Cannondale-Garmin chased for 40km because they missed the move. On the hardest climb of the day the group was brought back and another group went ahead. We weren't represented in this break so we worked on the front because one of the riders was endangering Louis GC position. Finally only 3 riders made it to the finish with the bunch around a minute.
"We were well represented and very active during the race again today. We won the best young rider classification and 8th place overall is a great performance by Louis and the team. I am very happy with the teamwork and commitment shown by our guys."
