WADA's updated list of banned substances has come into effect on January 1. As previously announced, the painkiller Tramadol will remain on the painkiller tramadol will remain on the monitored list. As opposed to this, there are a number of substances that are now banned.
One of those substances is Meldonium which is used in daily life as a drug to combat a myocardial infarction. Athletes can benefit from it because it increases their endurance. Also hormone inhibitor Leuprorelin and incretin mimetics, a known drug for diabetes patients, have been identified by WADA as prohibited substances.
Clonidine which lowers blood pressure, was not put on the prohibited list by WADA after investigation. The use of carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, a drug to treat eye disorders that could affect endurance, will also still be allowed.
Tramadol is accused of causing crashes in the peloton as it can create dizziness. It is reportedly used widely in the peloton but several teams have banned it in their internal policies. The Movement for a Credible Cycling MPCC have also banned it under their guidelines.
