Sacho Modolo will finally get his chance in the WorldTour next season when he joins Lampre-Merida to bolster its squad of sprinters. Having signed a two-year contract, the Italian will replace Alessandro Petacchi as one of the team's fast finishers.
Sacha Modolo has long been regarded as one of the most exciting Italian sprinting talents but until now he has not been able to make it into the WorldTour. Since his professional debut in 2010, he has been one of the captains on the ProContinental Bardiani Valvole-CSF Inox team.
That will all change next year when he is set to join Lampre-Merida on a 2-year contract. With the loss of Alessandro Petacchi earlier this year, the team has lacked another sprinter to join up with Roberto Ferrari as the team's main sprinters and Modolo will fit perfectly into that role.
Known not only for his fast finish but also his strength on the climbs, the Italian got a fabulous professional debut in 2010 when he finished 4th in the Milan-Sanremo just a few weeks after making his professional debut. His versatility makes him not just a perfect rider for the bunch sprints but also for some of classics.
"Modolo is a rider who has performed well during his first years as a professional and is appreaciated for his combination of speed and strength that has allowed him to take many victories," manager Giuseppe Saronni said. " He has gradually matured and has now reached a high level. The aim of our team is to see him go up against the biggest sprinters in the worlds and get some rewards for his efforts."
"He is a charismatic athlete and one of the best Italian sprinters. He will find it easy to integrate into our group of riders."
Modolo has had plenty of success recently, taking 6 stage wins in the Tour of Quinghai Lake before going on to finishing 2nd in the RideLondon Classic.
