The reliable teammate Maximilano Richeze had just completed his work leading Sacha Modolo to the front positions of the bunch in the final kilometer of the 2nd stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico (Camaiore-Cascina, 153 km) when at 200 mt from the finish the Lampre-Merida sprinter had to brake because of a crash in the position just ahead of him.
Despite his attempt to stop the bike, he hit one of the riders who had been involved in the crash and he fell on the ground hitting his right wrist. Team doctor Beltemacchi preferred to check the condition of the articulation by the means of the x-rays.
The sprint was won by the Belgian national champion Debusschere ahead Sagan and Bennett. Richeze in 20th, was the best Lampre-Merida rider.
The stage was not complicated: a 6 rider breakaway had led the race from the early kilometers to the final 15 km and the bunch had always controlled the gap was not too large.
Malori retained the blue jersey as leader of the overall classification, Pozzato is 57th at 18″.
“I’m sad because I could not exploit my good shape, this could have been a good opportunity," Sacha Modolo explained. "When I saw that a rider crashed ahead of me, I tried to brake because it was the only possibility to avoid him, since there were the fences on my right.
Unfortunately there was not enough space for stopping the bike, so I crashed.
"My wrist was aching so, agreeing with the team doctor, I preferred to undergo x-rays. Tomorrow I’ll be at the start of the race and I’ll try to do my best because I really want to be a protagonist when there is a chance“.
