BMC Racing Team's Amaël Moinard matched his best result of the season Tuesday with a seventh-place finish as teammate Darwin Atapuma joined him in the day's breakaway.

Moinard moved into eighth place overall, 31 seconds behind new race leader Simon Clarke (ORICA-GreenEDGE). Atapuma finished 12th on the day and, despite losing time to a crash on Sunday's opening road stage, is 22nd, 1:44 back. Moinard had also finished seventh at the Volta Limburg Classic in early April.

Davide Formolo (Garmin-Cannondale) soloed out of Moinard and Atapuma's group to win the stage, 22 seconds ahead of Moinard and Atapuma's group.
 
The BMC Racing Team's leader for the general classification, Damiano Caruso, finished in the second chase group, 64 seconds back of Formolo and is now 16th overall, 1:17 behind.

"I was fine but I knew that with riders like Kreuziger and Chaves, I would not be able to ride away," he said. "My idea was to be in the right group of 25 from the beginning so that they had to work behind and make it a little exhausting. And I wanted to take advantage of the descent to get away. Because if I waited for the final climb, I would maybe have been able to follow but I risked getting dropped. I always wanted to be one step ahead thinking of the pink jersey. That's why I was sprinting for the bonuses. I have no regrets, I did my best."
