In the build-up for the Amstel Gold Race, Bauke Mollema feels that he is getting better. The Dutch Trek rider only has a sore wrist, an injury he sustained in a crash in the Tour of the Basque Country. "But with the legs, everything is okay," he stressed.
Last Monday and Tuesday, Mollema could not really train much. "At the beginning of the week I could not even make a sandwich. I had to ask my teammates," he said. "When I have the hand in the drops and am sprinting, it still hurts."
Despite the pain, Mollema only has one goal for Sunday. "I'm going for the win. That's always the goal. I hope for a tough race. I can be with the best at the top of the Cauberg. In the last two kilometers, anyone can try."
Teammate Frank Schleck has confidence in Mollema. "Bauke was very strong in the Tour of the Basque Country. What is important for Sunday is that the team puts in a good performance. We have Bauke Mollema and Fabio Felline. They are the men for Sunday."
Mollema will rely on Schleck's experience. "Fränk is important for the team. He has already won this race. This year we have raced a lot together. And we have a lot of experience in this team," said Mollema. "The favorites? Michal Kwiatkowski, Philippe Gilbert, Michael Matthews. These are the names."
