After a great performance in the queen stage, Matteo Montaguti (Ag2r) tried his luck 3 kilometers from the finish in Lugano on stage 17 of the Giro d'Italia. He promises to try again.
Following the queen stage of the Giro, the peloton headed to Switzerland on the shores of the charming Lake Lugano. It was a day without great difficulty that allowed Matteo Montaguti (who was third in the GP Lugano earlier this year) to try his hand in the last hundred meters after his teammate Patrick Gretsch had previously tried his luck in a group of three riders.
"I knew the finale very well, especially the descent," he said. "I knew I had a good position to hope for something. Slagter and Gilbert attacked before me and we found ourselves in front with Paolini. Tinkoff-Saxo chased full gas. In the last turn before the Lake, Gilbert missed out and I had to brake to avoid him. I lost three bike lengths and the peloton caught us. I sat up, I knew I had nothing to do in a bunch sprint. But I see that the legs are good and I want to attack again tomorrow."
