Stage 4 of the Tour de San Luis could have been the decisive stage in the Tour de San Luis. Just as Fernando Gaviera (Colombia) appears to be the best sprinter, Daniel Díaz (Funvic) is the best climber of this stage race. Daniel Moreno finished 8th atop of the Alto de Amago, Ilnur Zakarin was 10th.
"I cannot complain. Of course I would have liked to win the stage, but we need to be realistic. It’s not because I won a stage here in 2007, that it is so easy to win. The level of this race is getting higher and higher every year. Moreover the Colombian and Argentinean riders are here in the middle of their season while we are just starting our year. In that sense I cannot complain. For them it is also so prestigious to win here in front of their own people. We are so motivated but they are riding today a kind of world championship. I finished 8th today, but I have the impression that I am now better than the other years at this time of the year. This is a good sign," said Daniel Moreno.
Also Ilnur Zakarin was happy about his performance.
"This is my first race for Katusha and up to now I can only be happy. We challenge here a temperature difference of 40 degrees Celsius, but we still perform and are following the best South-American riders. I think that Dani and me, we are the best two non-South-Americans in this hard stage," added Ilnur Zakarin.
Leader Dani Díaz was also the best rider after the 142,5 km stage from Villa Dolores to Alto de Amago, a climb of 10 kilometer with an average gradient of 7,2 %.
Last year’s winner on El Amago, Nairo Quintana (Movistar) tried to repeat his win of 2014, but was blocked by the Argentinean champion Díaz. Daniel Diaz won ahead of teammate Alex Diniz (+0.52) and Rodolfo Torres from Team Colombia (+0.54).
Moreno and Zakarin lost respectively +2.10 and +2.47.
In the general classification they are now 7th and 11th. Tomorrow there is a 17,4 km time trial in San Luis.
