Team Katusha finishes the 9th International Tour de San Luis with a good feeling. After the first competition of the 2015 season both Dani Moreno (6th) and Ilnur Zakarin (10th) finish in top ten of the Overall Classification.
"I think it is not bad at all to finish this race as first non South American rider. I am really on schedule for the rest of the season. This race made me very confident for the races to come. I enjoyed this week. I came here for the first time in 2007 when I won a stage and I am sure I will come back. This race is a perfect build up for the 2015 season. Moreover our six-man team proved to be a good team. I really need to thank all my Katusha teammates," said Dani Moreno.
"For me it was a pleasure to discover that I am ready for this higher step in my career. My transfer to Team Katusha made me a bit nervous in the beginning but my teammates all helped me to stay calm and guided me through the peloton. On the climbs and in the time trial I had to do it all by myself but I did not disappoint my teammates. I already look forward to my next race, where I want to confirm my performance in Argentina," said Ilnur Zakarin.
The 7th stage from San Luis to San Luis (122,4 km) did not change anything any more at the general classification. The lack of major difficulties in the last stage of the most important South American stage race of the season led to a predicted mass sprint on the Avenida del Fundador in San Luis. Nine riders tried to stay away from a chasing peloton but they did not succeed. In the mass sprint Mark Cavendish (Etixx – Quick Step) took his first victory of the season by beating two-fold stag winner Fernando Gaviria (Colombia) and Jakub Mareczko (Italy). Pavel Kochetkov became the best Katusha’s rider with 28th place.
Home rider Daniel Díaz (Funvic) won for the second time in his career the Tour de San Luis ahead of Rodolfo Torres (Team Colombia) (+1.05) and Nairo Quintana (Movistar) (+1.34). Behind Eduardo Sepúlveda (Bretagne Séché) and Rodrigo Contreras (Colombia) Dani Moreno finished 6th overall (+3.26). Ilnur Zakarin took a nice tenth place overall (+5.39).
