Today, the 15th stage of Vuelta a Espana, from Andorra to Peyragudes in France, was held. The stage was characterized by 4 climbs of 1st category, including the final one, as well as by the bad weather.
The big breakaway was formatted on the first climb Puerto del Canto. Further, the new escape of 6 riders went away from the first big group, among them was the winner of today’s stage Alexandre Geniez from FDJ. He attacked solo in the final part of the race and took the nice victory.
Second place was also taken by a rider from the first breakaway group Michele Scarponi from Lampre, who finished with 3 minutes and 3 seconds behind the winner.
Nicolas Roche from Saxo-Tinkoff, who attacked from the favourites group on the descent from penultimate climb, finished at 3rd position with +3.07.
The group of the Red jersey Vincenzo Nibali from Astana finished with 3 minutes and 20 seconds behind of the stage winner. Katusha Team leader Joaquín Rodriguez finished 7th place with the rest of the favourites.
Dani Moreno was dropped after a series of attacks, with the purpose of opening the race for Rodriguez.
“We rode uphill very strongly in the final climb. Our rivals, mostly Horner and Nibali, were too strong. It was impossible to drop them off. Joaquín [Rodriguez] and I could only follow. But there are still high mountains to come to bring Joaquín to the podium like in the Tour de France,” Moreno said.
The general classification of Vuelta a Espana did not change: Nibali is still the leader, Joaquim Rodriguez holds 4th position 2 minutes and 57 seconds behind. Daniel Moreno is 11th 9 minutes and 21 seconds behind Nibali.
