After a less than satisfying start of the 2014 season, CULT Energy Pro Cycling’s 30 year-old Martin Mortensen took revenge in June where he conquered a beautiful solo victory in the new one-day race, Velothon Wales. One week later, he played a major role in one of the most thrilling Danish national road race championships ever and finished second after having fought his way back to the front due to a puncture within the final 25 kilometers.
Now, he’s back for more in the Tour of Denmark:
“I’ve spent almost a month in Spain where I have been preparing for the rest of the season starting with the Tour of Denmark on home sold. Like almost the rest of the CULT Energy line-up, I took a few days off after the nationals and then started the build-up for the upcoming challenges. I feel re-generated and highly motivated,” says Mortensen.
Mortensen has been a professional since 2009. In 2010 he finished 4th overall in the Danish stage race while in 2013, he won the mountains classification and was voted the most aggressive rider in the peloton. Surely, his palmares in general make him hungry for more than secondary results:
“Naturally, the team tactics are the most important and I really think we have the riders to do well overall as well as in our quest for stage results and I’ll do what I can to help the team and support my teammates on the road. If I get the chance to chase a stage victory, I think I have both the experience and form to achieve that objective. But then again, it all depends on how the first stage or two unfolds. We have a line-up with several cards to play in the overall classification and I won’t eliminate the possibility of going for the GC either, depending on the circumstances and the outcome of the first few stages,” Mortensen concludes.
