Movistar Team is one of the six WorldTour teams that are not part of the new Velon project involving 11 elite teams who ask for a new "financial model" and a "more consistent" calendar. Eusebio Unzue, General manager of the telephone squad, confirms that "for now" they will stay"outside" the new group although they agree in some principles.

Eusebio Unzue knew all about the launch of the initiative. The suprise is that Movistar decided not to be one of the founding teams. "We have been part of the work and collaborated," he told Biciciclismo in an interview about the project that was once known under the Avignon name. However, the Spanish team has decided not to join Velon, at least for now.

"While agreeing in many of its principles, we decided not to join them at this time because there were factors that could collide directly with the objectives of Telefónica. We have decided to stay outside," said Unzué. The point is that Movistar is a media company that builds part of its business on television so the conflict of interest is evident.

"Some of the principles seem interesting to defend the future of cycling and we are committed to this: to allow the sport to evolve and move towards a better future for our sport. However, we considered that it was not the right time," he said.

Belkin Pro Cycling, BMC Racing, Garmin-Sharp, Lampre-Merida, Lotto-Belisol, Omega Pharma - Quick-Step, Orica-GreenEDGE, Team Giant-Shimano, Team Sky, Team Tinkoff-Saxo and Trek Factory Racing are the 11 founders of Velon while AG2R La Mondiale, FDJ, Team Europcar, Movistar Team, Katusha and Astana are not part of the group.

Velon is "an open group" that everyone can join and collaborate with. Unzué intends to follow this line. "We have common interests, so that does not mean we will not collaborate on initiatives and specific projects. But for we won't be part of it."

He also explains the team's decision not to join the Movement for a Credible Cycling (MPCC).

"We have no need to so," he said. "Of course we defend many of their ethical principles because we firmly believe that a new cycling is about to come. We are very concerned about this even though you can not avoid having individuals who try to cheat," he said.
