The best climbers in the world need to take care in the mountains in 2014 as there will be not just one Quintana to keep an eye on. Movistar has signed a contract with Nairo's 21-year-old brother Dayer who will make his professional debut following a successful season on the amateur team Lizarte.
In 2013, Nairo Quintana set the world on fire in by his splendid riding in the mountains that allowed the talented Colombian to win the Vuelta al Pais Vasco and the Vuelta a Burgos and finish 2nd overall in the Tour de France. Having once had success with the signing of a rider from the Quintana family, the Movistar team now hopes to repeat the success.
Today the team has announced that it has signed Nairo's 21-year-old brother Dayer who will make his debut in the pro scene after having competed in the ranks of amateur squad Lizarte in 2013. Like his older brother, Dayer is a talented climber who finished within the best ten more than twenty times in races on the Spanish calendar despite only starting his season in April.
After a brilliant junior career, the younger Quintana had to stop riding for 18 months while he served in the national police, getting back in the summer of 2012 when he battled well against experienced pros despite still in his early 20's. Dayer's first contact with his new teammates will come next week during a team meeting held in the outskirts of Pamplona.
Quintana is the 7th new signing by Movistar who have previously announced that John Gadret, Jasha Sütterlin, Alejandro Marque, Adriano Malori and Ion and Gorka Izagirre will join the team.
