In 2011 Linus Gerdemann won the Tour de Luxembourg and this year he will return to the race for the first time since having a one-year break from competition. The German leads MTN-Qhubeka in the five-day event and will be directed by sports director Michel Cornelisse, himself a former winner of the race.
The 74th Skoda – Tour de Luxembourg gets underway on Wednesday with the opening 2.5km prologue. Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung will return to the Luxembourgian race after debuting in the event last year. While the teams best result last year was a 2nd place on stage 1 by Gerald Ciolek, the team will start the race this year with 2 previous winners among its camp. Both Linus Gerdemann and DS Michel Cornelisse are past champions of this UCI 2.HC category race.
After the prologue, the 4 road stages will all be run over undulating terrain that should provide for exciting, and attacking racing. The final two stages on Saturday and Sunday respectively both finish with a championship type of circuit and this is where the general classification should be decided.
Team MTN-Qhubeka p/b Samsung will send a well rounded squad to the Tour of Luxembourg that will have a number cards to play on each of the respective stages. Andreas Stauff, Daniel Teklehaimanot, Ignatas Konovalovas, Linus Gerdemann, Jaco Venter, Jacques Janse van Rensburg, Jay Thomson and Johann van Zyl are the riders who will make up the roster for the Tour of Luxembourg.
"I think for this race we will definitely have to go for the General Classification as our goal," Directeur Sportif Michel Cornelisse "We have a strong team here with Gerdemann as a previous winner of this race but all our other riders are strong so we have a good chance of getting a good result. I have just come from the riders rooms a few moments ago and the motivation is really high among them."
