Daniel Navarro (Cofidis) had to abandon at kilometer 115 of the fourth stage of the Vuelta a Andalucía after a crash in the muddy conditions. "I do not understand waht happened. My bike just slid out. It was no raincoat crash," he tells Ciclismo en Asturias from his team hotel.
At first, Navarro was assisted by the race doctor and the first news pointed to a possible fracture of the ulna and radius. Luckily that was discarded later in the hospital of Jaén, where various tests showed a fracture of the fifth metacarpal of the right hand and a nasty blow to the ribs.
Navarro already suffered a crash in the first stage where a large number of riders hit the deck and his teammate Kenneth Vanbilsen fractured the radius. The blow to the knee, coupled with a mechanical on the stage to the Alto de Hazallanas, made him unable to perform in the race where he had big expectations. "Due to the crash of the first day and the mechanical at the bottom of the Hazallanas, I never got the chance to see what my level really is," he said.
