Mark Cavendish won the Clasica de Almeria but Caja Rural-Seguros RGA was one of the stars of the day thanks to Miguel Ángel Benito who was present in the main breakaway. Benito, who is doing his first professional season after having been with the Caja Rural-Seguros RGA amateur team, has had a remarkable start to the year.
After the race, the young rider analyzed the race:
"I finished completely empty and I didn't feel good during the race but this is also part of our sport," he said. "Not every day is going well. The feelings were not good for the race and the hard pace, wind and climbs didn't make it better, only worse. But from what I've seen, my breakaway companions did not have much better feeling.
"Bardet was supportive and have tried to organize the group but there was no clear agreement and the workload was unfairly distributed so he split the group. There was a good cooperation between me and Romain Sicard but we couldn't get closer until Bardet slowed down which allowed us to catch him again.
"I am very satisfied, I think I've done my job. My leaders didn't have to worry and I have given the team presence in the race. I'm very happy."
David Arroyo and Miguel Ángel Benito were the first riders from Caja Rural-Seguros RGA to cross the finish line. Francesco Lasca, the sprinter in Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, had a mechanical moments before the peloton split and so he couldn't do the sprint.
